Glan-Thompson Polarizing Prisms
Calcite Crystals
Glan-Thompson calcite polarizing prisms are utilized in design of
low-power applications where their wider field angle allows the designer to
increase prism throughput in an optical system.

The entrance and exit faces are perpendicular to the prism axis and
contain the crystal optic axis. The non-transmitted polarization (ordinary
ray) is absorbed in the medium surrounding the sides of the prism.

The prisms are available in two different ratios of length to aperture: the
standard form, having a ratio of 2.5, and the long form with a ratio of 3.0.
The useable angular field of each is symmetrical about the prism axis and
varies as a function of wavelengt

Glan-Taylor Polarizing Prisms
Fiber Optics
The Glan-Taylor polarizers are useful in low to medium power
applications requiring a high degree of polarization purity and high
transmission.

The entrance and exit faces are cut and polished perpendicalar to the
prism axis, and the transmitted linearly polarized extraordinary beam is
passing through the prism undeviated.

Glan-Laser Polarizing Prisms
When highly collimated laser energy is being used and need for a large
angular polarization feild is not present, these air spaced units should be
considered. The two calcite prisms are embedded on four sides in black
absorbing glass, effectively sealing the interior faces against outside
contamination. The interior faces are polished to Brewster's angle for the
transmitted E-radiation, and A/R coatings are provided (at additional cost)
on the outer faces so that reflection losses are held to an absolute
minimum.

Applications
Wollaston Polarizing Prisms
The  Wollaston prism splits an incoming unpolarized beam into two
deviated beams of mutually orthogonal polarizations. Both deviated
transmitted beams are nearly symmetrical about the incident direction
of the entering beam. The angular separation is wavelength dependent
and prisms having an angular separation of 5, 10,  15 and 20 degrees
are available as standard items. Air spaced  Wollaston prisms for
Ultraviolet applications are available by special order.

Calcite Beam Displacers
This is a simple refractiong, useful when a narrow collimated beam
is to be split into two orthogonally polarized components emerging
parallel to one another and to the entering beam. The ordinary
component is undeviated from the entering beam, and the lateral
dislpacement of the extraordinary component is proportional to the
element length, as may be inferref from the table.
